Popular Mechanics Magazine named the Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Hammer Driver-Drill (BHP454) “Best Overall” in a test of cordless driver-drills, published in their December 2008 issue.
The magazine tested 18V Lithium-Ion cordless driver-drills and hammer driver-drills from Craftsman, DeWalt, Hitachi, Milwaukee, Rigid, Ryobi, and Skil. The test methodology included boring holes with a 1-inch spade bit, driving 2-inch lag screws into pilot holes bored into a pressure treated beam, and driving 3-inch drywall screws until each battery quit.
When the dust settled, the Makita BHP454 beat them all (read the review and check the number of 3” drywall screws driven by each model – the Makita BHP454 put up some serious numbers). In fact, all three testers agreed the Makita was “one of the best power tools they’d ever used.”
Makita’s engineers built the new BHP454 faster with 25 percent more speed in low gear than the previous model, but maintained a max torque of 560 inch-pounds and a PTI Torque of 360 inch-pounds. This high-speed and high-torque combination makes the new BHP454 a true workhorse hammer driver-drill for any serious tradesman.
