STRANG AND MULLINS GO 3-4 AT GNCC ROUND 2: DAVIS WINS WESTERN HARE SCRAMBLES 450A OPENER

Team FMF Makita Suzuki Off Road’s Josh Strang put in a great performance to take his first podium of the season in Round 2 of the Grand National Cross Country Series. GNCC Round 1 winner Charlie Mullins also came through the pack to finish fourth and keep his title hopes alive.
Mullins bike was slow to fire from the “dead engine” start and Charlie went into the first turn dead last, but it wasn’t long before the determined RM-Z450 rider had blitzed most of the field and worked his way up to third place. He also set the fastest time of the first lap by 9 seconds over his closest rival. Unfortunately on lap two he caught his foot in a rut and twisted his ankle severely which slowed his charge during the 3-plus hour GNCC.

Strang went from 8th to first on the opening lap and looked like a sure bet for another Makita Suzuki victory, but, Josh was in recovery mode from serious food poisoning (on Thursday he spent the day in bed throwing up). About the 3rd lap his stomach started knotting up again and he began to lose time. He gutted it out and went for a do or die pass at the end that saw him and his competition both on the ground just before the checkers. Josh felt that it would not be fair to take the spot and he let the other rider go across the finish line second while Josh finished third with Mullins in fourth.

Meanwhile on the west coast, round 1 of the Western Hare Scrambles Series took place at Rynoland in Anza, California. Team FMF Makita Suzuki Off Road’s J.P. Davis was on hand to take his first major victory of the season by winning the 450A class in the 3-hour main event. Davis gated well and found himself in second for the first 20 minutes, and then he closed the gap and took the lead. From that point on Davis went unchallenged and took the win as well as the point’s lead for the 450A class Championship.
