Silver Medal eludes D.J. Eckstrom after mid race crash
Aspen , Colorado
Oh, what could have been. From the first time on the track to the main event it was obvious the Polaris snowmobiles of DJ and Shaun were at the front of the pack. “Our sleds were working great as soon as we unloaded them from the transporter” Steve Scheuring said “The whole practice session was spent fine tuning rather than playing catch up”.
Qualifying
Shaun went out in the first heat and was running in a transfer spot when a yellow flag came out. This made him slow down through the rhythm section and when he tried to clear the next double he came up short and was ejected from the sled. Shaun made his way to the main event via the LCQ where he secured a transfer spot.
DJ made it to the main event in his qualifier grabbing one of the top five spots. DJ was one of the three fastest racers in qualifying.
The Main event
Coming out of the first set of turns DJ was second going up the hill in hot pursuit of the leader. After five laps DJ and the leader had distanced themselves from the rest of the pack and it looked like the Silver medal was DJ’s. On lap six DJ tried a different line going up the hill and caught a kicker which separated him and his sled. By the time he got back on he was a lap down and the hopes for a Silver vanished. Meanwhile Shaun had worked his way up to fifth from the back row and one lap later was rear ended and his rear axle was bent so bad he could not continue and had to pull off of the track.
