Fine Woodworking Magazine put 18V Lithium-Ion Cordless Drills to the test in their October 2009 issue. The test reviewed Makita’s BDF452HW 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2" Driver Drill, as well as tools from Bosch, Craftsmen, DeWalt, Hitachi, Milwaukee, Porter-Cable, Ridgid, Ryobi and Skil. In the end, Makita came out on top.
Tom Begnal of Fine Woodworking used real-world tests to reveal the top performers. Power, battery life, and control were respectively measured by torque, run time, and clutch. To measure torque, each drill drove 3/8”-diameter 3”-long lag bolts into hard maple. To test battery life, 1-1/2”-diameter spade bits were used to drill through red oak. Lastly, control was measured by the drills consistency when using the clutch.
Makita received both the "Best Overall" and "Best Value" awards. The BDF452HW also received the highest torque rating of all products tested.
The Makita 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2" Driver Drill (BDF452HW) offers more power in a compact design. The 4-pole maximum torque motor delivers 450 in. lbs. of Max Torque and 285 in. lbs. of PTI Torque for a range of drilling and driving applications, yet it weighs just 3.5 lbs. for less operator fatigue.
